Police Officers Filmed Beating Car Chase Suspect

New Hampshire's governor has called for a full investigation after police officers were captured on video appearing to beat a suspect who had surrendered after leading them on a high-speed chase.

Footage captured by a news helicopter showed Richard Simone, of Worcester, Massachusetts, stepping slowly out of his truck, kneeling down and putting his hands on the ground before several officers set upon him.

The chase began when Simone, 50, refused to stop for local police in Holden, Massachusetts. He was wanted on multiple warrants for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, larceny and failure to stop for police.

He was pursued by Holden police officers and a Massachusetts State Police cruiser joined the chase.

Simone led officers through several towns at speeds above 100mph, with his pickup truck "making abrupt lane changes as the (suspect) continued to try to evade capture" and crashing at least once, state police spokesman David Procopio said.

He was eventually stopped following an hour-long pursuit after spike strips were laid out in Nashua.

In the footage, police officers with their weapons drawn surround the vehicle as the man begins to get out.

When he lowers himself to the ground, he is set upon, with officers visibly throwing punches.

Mr Procopio said that although the driver was arrested in New Hampshire, Massachusetts State Police will review his apprehension "to determine whether the level of force deployed during the arrest was appropriate".

Ricki Eshman, a spokeswoman for New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan, said: "The Governor is aware of the situation and we've reached out to the departments of safety and justice.

"All New Hampshire public safety officials are held to the highest standards, and the Governor expects this will be fully investigated."

Simone will face new charges related to the chase.
